Calling all dare devils. Childhood Cancer Support is calling for volunteers to face their fears in the name of charity and ‘Walk the Plank’ over Brisbane’s Story Bridge.
Every day, children with cancer face their fears. They face uncertain Doctor’s appointments, scary treatment days, surgeries, and treatment cycles that could go for months.
Walk the Plank is a fundraising activity for Childhood Cancer Support’s national Talk Like a Pirate Day on 17 September to raise much needed funds for regional families battling childhood cancer.
Local students from Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School and West Moreton Anglican College, Molly and Josh were brave enough to be the first to walk the plank.
“I was really nervous to go up. I was shaking thinking I was going to fall, but I put everything into perspective, and it made me realise that walking a metre on a plank was nothing compared to what these children and their families have to go through every single day,” Molly says.
“After I did it, there was a rush of adrenalin and it was very exciting. Once you walk the plank, you think you can do anything.”
Josh says he wanted to climb the bridge again after his experience.
“After I conquered the plank, I felt so good! I hopped off and wanted to do it again. It’s one of the best opportunities that I have had in my lifetime.”
“I’d love to see the people in my community jump on board and start fundraising for this cause. Not only will you have a thrilling experience, but you’ll also be helping children in need of support during their cancer treatment.”
To Walk the Plank, volunteers only need to raise $600 per student or $750 per adult and all funds go to Childhood Cancer Support who provides free accommodation to regional families when they need to re-locate to Brisbane for treatment, as well as transport and emotional support.
